With 3:47 to go in the third quarter in Oakland Sunday, Kansas City's Jamaal Charles scored his fifth touchdown of the day, on a 71-yard catch-and-run of an Alex Smith pass. He had nearly 19 minutes to tie one of the two oldest records on the NFL books.
Charles was kept out of the end zone the rest of the way, though. The Chiefs blasted the Raiders 56-31, and Charles became the first player to score five touchdowns in a game since Clinton Portis, who ran for five for Denver against Kansas City in 2003.
Three players have scored six touchdowns in a game, with the last being Gale Sayers for the Bears against the 49ers on Dec. 12, 1965. Ernie Nevers was the first, on Thanksgiving Day 1929, for the Chicago Cardinals against the Bears. Nevers also kicked four extra points to give him a record 40 points in one game, also a record that still stands 84 years later.

A four-time 1,000-yard rusher whose season high for touchdown receptions is three, Charles scored four of his touchdowns on passes. He gained 20 yards on the ground and 195 in the air.
Cleveland Browns halfback Dub Jones - the father of Baltimore Colts quarterback Bert Jones - scored six touchdowns against the Bears on Nov. 25, 1951.
